Ceramic sanitaryware: robustness from natural raw materials

Ceramic sanitary products are among the most durable and robust of all: easy to care for, resistant, scratchproof, and heatproof. And that is a key reason why Duravit offers a lifetime guarantee on most of its sanitary ceramic products. The complete bathroom provider uses natural raw materials in its manufacturing processes: clay, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar are available around the world, meaning that Duravit’s international manufacturing sites can source and process the basic materials from their own regions. These short transport routes are doubly beneficial: not only does this strategy help the complete bathroom provider save CO2 emissions, it also guarantees secure, stable, and local sourcing of raw materials.


DuraCeram®: less material = fewer emissions

The DuraCeram® material used at Duravit is testament to how the highest design standards and sustainability can be combined: unlike conventional bathroom ceramic, which has a wall thickness of 12 to 14 mm, DuraCeram® permits thinner wall thicknesses without sacrificing strength. Alongside their refined and delicate design, the washbasins are 28 percent lighter, which reduces the consumption of raw materials accordingly: DuraCeram® has enabled Duravit AG to save an average of around 60 tonnes of raw materials each year since 2016.


DuroCast Nature: the first recyclable mineral material

DuroCast Nature sees Duravit take a pioneering role in the area of recyclable materials: the mineral material DuroCast Nature is made from polyurethane mixed with marble powder and sealed with a gelcoat surface. This composition lends the material excellent material properties: robust, UV-resistant, easy to clean, and not least maximum anti-slip properties on the matt surfaces. These properties are destined for use in the bathroom, which is why Duravit has developed Sustano, the first recyclable shower tray. Thanks to their low weight, Sustano shower trays are lighter to transport, which helps reduce CO2 emissions. After the end of their useful life, shower trays made from DuroCast Nature can be returned either to Duravit or a local recycling center in keeping with the life-cycle principle. They can then be made into new shower trays, for example, or processed further for industrial purposes.


Wooden furniture: a challenge in the bathroom

The bathroom is a challenging place for wood as a raw material because temperature fluctuations and the prevalence of moisture place great strain on the material. To enable the bathroom furniture made by the Duravit brand to withstand these challenges, the complete bathroom supplier attaches great importance to surface treatment. Ultimately, a sealed surface is crucial for bathroom furniture to prevent moisture from getting into the wood. Alongside a high-quality finishing of the products to ensure their durability, quality is also a key factor for Duravit, from the moment the raw materials are selected. The Schenkenzell site, where Duravit’s bathroom furniture is manufactured, is PEFC*-certified for this very reason. The quality seal ensures sustainable forestry thanks to an international and independent forestry certification system.
