A masterfully restored gem with a rich history: Gut Berneck captivates with its mix of self-playing instruments, antique clocks, and stylish furniture from Zurich’s Hotel Savoy. The recently reopened property, built in the style of a castle in 1911, sits majestically above Schramberg in the Black Forest and combines a monument, guesthouse, event venue, and museum in one. Gut Berneck underwent a heritage-sensitive restoration under the guidance of Dr. Hans-Jochem Steim, co-owner of the German clockmaker Junghans. The restoration also included stylish bathroom design, including sanitary ceramics from Duravit.
Industrial history in the bathroom
The newly renovated bathrooms strike a successful balance between the historical building fabric and modern creature comforts. Green tiles from the Junghans clock factory imbue the bathrooms with historical charm, while gray-marbled and sand-gray tiles create contemporary accents. The timeless ambience is enhanced by the elegant washbasins and wall-mounted toilets from the Starck 3 series. The blend of inclusive comfort and design in the bathroom of the barrier-free guest room is particularly accomplished, not least due to the wheelchair-accessible Vital washbasin and the Vital wall-mounted toilet from the Starck 3 range.
Traces of time
The nine suites on the upper level and first basement story of Gut Berneck feature a spacious, open design. The elevated vantage of the property provides a sweeping view of the town of Schramberg and the surrounding Black Forest along with the nine-story terrace building (built 1916-18) of the Junghans clock factory. Two clocks hang side by side in each room as an homage. Some of the furniture originally adorned the famous Hotel Savoy (Baur en Ville) in Zurich and further enhances the blend of historical charm and sense of luxury.
Harmonious soundscapes
In the entrance hall, the original chandelier and an instrument consisting of an organ, harmonium, and celesta dating from 1920 immediately draw the gaze. Dr. Hans-Jochem Steim’s pride and joy of is the collection of some two dozen self-playing musical instruments – including orchestrions, barrel organs, and music boxes.
